The decrease in responsiveness that follows continuous stimulation (adAPtation) is common to all sensory systems, including olfaction. With continued exposure to chronically present ambient odors, individuals perception of odor intensity is greatly reduced. Moreover, these perceptual changes can be profound and durable.
